**ATTENTION ALL EGLIN HUNTERS – CWD DETECTED IN FLORIDA**

The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) confirmed detection of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Holmes County in June 2023.  CWD is a contagious disease of the brain and central nervous system that is 100% fatal to deer.  This is the first known case of CWD in Florida.  FWC has established a CWD Management Zone within which specific regulations have been established to minimize spread of the disease.  Eglin AFB will abide by all FWC regulations established specific to CWD management.  FWC is asking anyone who sees a sick, abnormally thin deer or finds a deer dead from unknown causes to report such to FWC’s CWD Hotline at 866-CWD-WATCH (866-293-9282).  Currently there is no scientific evidence that CWD can be transmitted to humans or livestock under natural conditions; however, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) DO NOT recommend consuming meat from animals that test positive for CWD.  More information can be found at https://www.myfwc.com.  Updates to FWC response that impact Eglin hunting regulations will be posted at https://eglin.isportsman.net.

Information on Wild Hog Diseases:

Wild hogs can carry a number of diseases (e.g., Brucellosis, Tularemia, etc.), some of which can be transmitted to humans and dogs. However, when handled and prepared properly the potential for human infection is extremely low. Hog hunters are reminded to use caution when handling and processing wild hogs:
             1. Avoid direct contact unless actively processing harvested hogs.
             2. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection when processing/butchering.
             3. Do not process hogs that appear sickly.
             4. Wash hands thoroughly and disinfect tools after processing.
             5. Cook meat thoroughly (160°F minimum internal temperature).
